Sound And Fury Characterizatio Essay, Research Paper
Several times throughout The Sound and the Fury, as in other novels, are scenes in which the household, or parts of it, is sitting down at the dinner tabular array for a repast. In Jason s subdivision, there is a peculiar scene in which this occurs. At this point in clip, the Compson household consists of Jason, his female parent, Quentin and Benjy, and Dilsey and Luster. The scene begins by Jason declining to eat dinner, or even travel to the dinner tabular array, until his female parent and Quentin come down to attach to him. This state of affairs clearly shows the obstinacy of Jason s personality. Several times Dilsey asks him to merely eat by himself, and to bury about the other household members who are evidently excessively ill or occupied to come down to dinner. Alternatively, Jason continues to read the paper, declining to travel until the remainder of the household has come down to fall in him.
In the same duologue as above, non merely is the trait of obstinacy shown, but besides his changeless sarcastic, about cheeky tone. When Dilsey foremost tells Jason that dinner is ready, alternatively of a thank you or any other common words of grasp, he replies Is it? . . .Excuse me, I didn t hear anybody come down. This clearly shows his sarcastic tone towards all people.
Jason is seen as the adult male of the house of all time since Mr. Compson died. His female parent really corrects herself when she calls the house her house, alternatively stating it is Jason s and that he is the caput of it. This is what gives him a batch of his haughtiness and arrogance. His female parent is invariably stating him how he is the higher-up of all the other kids and even that he is the caput of the house and that it is his. Who wouldn t get such a large self-importance with the congratulations he receives from his female parent?
When Quentin eventually sits at the tabular array, Jason instantly starts to rend her apart. In his usual misanthropic tone he invariably irritates Quentin to the point where she breaks. Jason brings up the state of affairs in which he was trailing Quentin with another adult male, but alternatively of really stating his female parent that he was trailing Quentin, he generalizes the narrative to except her. Quentin knows that this narrative is about her, and that it will acquire her in problem, so she is invariably being bothered by the fact that she could acquire in problem at any minute Jason decides to advert her name. This is an illustration of how manipulative and galling Jason is, particularly to Quentin, who has a deep hatred for Jason.
Jason besides seems to be a chronic prevaricator, an expected feature of such an narcissistic dork. He is invariably lying to his female parent about his money use and where he has been and done throughout the twenty-four hours. He lies to his foreman at the hardware shop about why he was late and what he has been making. Not merely does he lie to his female parent, but besides he instills a deep depression into her. He does this because he knows it gives him power and control. He likes the fact that his female parent is dependent on him and practically bows down in his presence. At one point in their conversation, he said in his mocking tone You ve got Ben to depend on. Cheer up. Just a twosome paragraphs down they start speaking about Quentin ( Jason s brother ) and Jason answers Too bad it wasn t me alternatively of him, you d be a batch better off. Both of these lines spoken by Jason will convey unhappiness to his female parent about the rough worlds of his other siblings, in bend doing him look virtually unflawed, and however the best sibling.
He thinks of himself as the best sibling and is complete
ly insensitive to his ain relations. He has no attention or love for any of his brothers or sisters. Never one time did Jason demo unhappiness or sorrow for Quentin s decease, nor understanding or sympathy for Ben s atrocious status.
Throughout this scene and the full book, we don t acquire a batch into Quentin s head or actions. However we do deduce that she feels wholly uncomfortable, unwanted and out of topographic point in her life state of affairs. She was thrown into that little dysfunctional household and she knows it. She seldom talks or even comes out of her room to discourse with her grandma or Jason. The lone events we know of Quentin are immoral, troublemaking 1s. She wears heavy do up and gallivants with about any adult male she can happen. This is more than probably because of the deficiency of love from place. Jason can non stand her, and he lets her know it. Her grandma is so delusional and can non see her as anything else but a little reproduction of Caddy.
After being soundless for the full repast, Quentin can non stand Jason s mind games any longer and she screams that she is the manner she is because Jason drives her to be, the Jason makes her make the things she does and be bad and immoral. She seems to demo marks of emotional emphasis by being so rather and confide and times, and so all of a sudden responding with an effusion of shouting. This could besides be a mark of merely being a adolescent, traveling through unsmooth emotional times that become even worse without the support of loved 1s.
The following character being portrayed in this scene is Carolina. She is over concerned with Jason, being her lone normal kid. She considers him the caput of the house, which I personally find quite unusual for a female parent to be naming her youngest boy the caput of the house. It about seems as she looks at Jason as her hubby, particularly after he passed off. She besides keeps herself locked up from society and the outside universe. She likes the fact that she is unsighted to the evil of the universe, when ironically so much of it is in herself and her household. By maintaining herself confide, she doesn Ts have to compare herself or her household to anything else, and they won t be seen as dysfunctional.
We depict from this scene what the society is like during these times. Compared the populace in which we live today, people were less rushed back so and took more significance to a really incorporate household. There was such importance on the fact that all household members had to be present for the repast and eat together. Now it is lucky if repasts are eaten together by the whole household, which everyone s single agendas.
This society was a less evolved one in the fact that the adult male was ever the caput of the house, and that he worked for the benefit of everyone else. The remainder of the household was so expected to be obedient to this adult male.
In this scene, the implicit in point we understand is the disfunction of the Compson household. It helps paint a clearer image in the reader s head about how unusual and coldhearted and truly uncaring the household was towards each other and everyone around them. Showing how the household interacted on a day-to-day footing, like what was done in this scene, helps us understand how truly dysfunctional and unnatural the Compsons are.
More specifically, these scene gives the reader s, hopefully, some fondness for Quentin and some hatred for Jason, hence puting up the reader s for Quentin s retaliation. This scene besides revisits the thought of Quentin being the possible incestrious merchandise of Quentin and Caddy.
